DWAC Speaker – Jennifer Heath 06/28 – SOLD OUT
Land of the Unconquerable: The Hidden Strengths of Afghan Women
Based on her co-edited volume (with Ashraf Zahedi), Land of the Unconquerable: The Lives of Contemporary Afghan Women, Heath examines the realities of life for women in both urban and rural settings, and address topics such as food security, war, livelihood, health, marriage, education, politics, community development and more. This talk reaches beyond sensational headlines to offer a three-dimensional portrait of Afghan women. Eschewing stereotypes about the burqa, Heath will focus instead on Afghan women’s empowerment and agency and on their struggles for peace and justice in the face of a brutal ongoing war.
Jennifer Heath is an independent scholar, curator, award-winning activist and cultural journalist, the author or editor of nine volumes, including The Veil: Women Writers on Its History, Lore and Politics (University of California Press), The Scimitar and the Veil: Extraordinary Women of Islam (Paulist Press), The Echoing Green: The Garden in Myth and Memory (Penguin) and A House White With Sorrow: Ballad for Afghanistan (Roden Press), and, forthcoming from Baksun Books, El Repelente (Or the 2012 Antics of Anabela). Heath was born in Australia and grew up in Latin America and Afghanistan.
